Workshop Messages

Greetings from the President of INWES To the participants of the IAWIT regional workshop “Women run ICT Enterprises”
Dear Suriya and Participants:
INWES is very proud to have helped spawn IAWIT with Dr. Suriya Mayandi Thevar. Your new organization will hopefully be an Organisational member of INWES, to share our best practices together and create networking opportunities. The creation of your group is definitely a major accomplishment and I am sure you will grow in time to join many regions of this large sub continent. I am sure this will provide various levels of mentoring in India, from women who work in the field to women studying in engineering, and from engineering students to younger girls in their community. The objectives of INWES are very much in tune with those of IAWIT and so it is wonderful that we are all working together with the vision of a better future worldwide through the greater participation of girls and women in engineering and science. IAWIT will be a vibrant model association, led by strong, intelligent women. The theme of your workshop "Women run ICT Enterprises" is most timely and will provide a platform from which change can be advocated. I wish I could be with you at this wonderful event. However I am pleased to have the opportunity to wish the organizers and the participants a very successful workshop and to see all of you at the next ICWES conference, ICWES14, in Lille, France, in July 15-18, 2008.

What are we doing to tackle world poverty?
The Department for International Development (DFID) is the part of the UK Government that manages Britain's aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty.
We are headed by a Cabinet minister, one of the senior ministers in the Government. This reflects how important the Government sees reducing poverty around the world. We have two headquarters (in London and East Kilbride, near Glasgow) and 64 offices overseas. We also have over 2500 staff, almost half of whom work abroad.
Why is the UK Government involved in development?
More than a billion people, one in five of the world's population, live in extreme poverty. This means they live on less than 65p a day. Ten million children die before their fifth birthday, most of them from preventable diseases. More than 113 million children do not go to school.
In a world of growing wealth, such levels of human suffering and wasted potential are not only morally wrong, they are also against our own interests. We are becoming much closer to people in faraway countries. We trade more and more with people around the world.

Many of the problems which affect us, war and conflict, international crime, refugees, the trade in illegal drugs and the spread of diseases like HIV and AIDS, are caused or made worse by poverty in developing countries. Getting rid of poverty will make for a better world for everybody.
DFID Values
DFID's values define the way in which we intend to live up to our strategic aim of halving world poverty by the year 2015. They also provide a framework for improved performance. Our values are:
ambition and determination to eliminate poverty
diversity and the need to balance work and private life
ability to work effectively with others
desire to listen, learn and be creative
professionalism and knowledge
Our policies and processes support and underpin these values. And, it is, of course, vital that our behaviours reflect and underline them too.
The Institute for Development Policy and Management, established in 1958, is the UK’s largest University-based International Development Studies department, with over seventy Manchester-based professional, administrative and associated staff.
Its objective is to promote social and economic development, particularly within lower-income countries and for disadvantaged groups, by enhancing the capabilities of individuals and organisations through education, training, consultancy, research and policy analysis.
In recent years it has been increasingly recognised that the quality of policy and institutional design represents a key constraint to development. The Institute offers, within a friendly and supportive atmosphere, the services of a wide range of people specialising in the practical problems of policy formulation and implementation, organisational design and management, backed up by specialist library and computing facilities and by forty-five years of institutional experience. The combined field experience of members of the Institute covers over sixty countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean and the Pacific. Much of this experience has been gained in work for national and international agencies where the focus has been on finding workable solutions to development problems and strengthening institutional capacities. Madurai Kamaraj University, (originally known as Madurai University) was named after the historical city of Madurai, the ancient capital of the Pandyan rulers and the seat of three famous Tamil academies going back to the beginnings of the Christian and even perhaps an earlier Era, was inaugurated on 6th February 1966 at the heart of the city. Its nucleus was the Extension centre of the University of Madras located at Madurai.
Two years later, the foundation stone for a new campus was laid by Dr.Zakir Hussain, the then President of India on Madurai - Theni road, 13 kilometers to the west of the city. Since then the campus has grown into a beautiful University township with an extensive area of about 750 acres, appropriately called in Tamil "Palkalainagar". And in 1978, the name of the University was changed to Madurai Kamaraj University to honour one of the most illustrious sons of our country. The two components of the name may signify the pride in the hoary tradition of the Tamils and the present concern to live up to their ideals.
